"Rugido del León" by Alika & Quinto Sol @ PURA VYB Live in Los Angeles, CA (2023) E6S2 #MakeArtNotWar

Join us for an unforgettable musical experience as we present "Rugido del León," a mesmerizing live performance by the renowned artist Alika, backed by the sensational reggae band, Quinto Sol. This enchanting event took place at the vibrant Pura Vybz Latin reggae party, hosted by Senator Jones in Santa Monica, California. July the 20th of 2023 aka "Friends Day" in Argentina.

Alika, an exceptional Uruguayan-Argentine rapper, singer, and reggae musician, graced the stage with her powerful lyrics and soulful melodies. Inspired by Rastafari philosophy, Alika's music reflects themes of respect, dignity, and the struggles of everyday life in the Third World. Her passionate performance of "Rugido del León" left the audience in awe and immersed in the magic of her reggae vibes.

Quinto Sol, a dynamic reggae band hailing from East Los Angeles, added their unique touch with roots-reggae woven seamlessly with Latin rhythms like Cumbia, Rumba, and son. Together, Alika and Quinto Sol created a world-beat tour of music, taking the audience on a transcendent journey of unity and cultural celebration.

Despite a near postponement due to Alika's delayed flight from Mexico, she arrived just in time to ignite the stage with her electrifying presence. The energy in the air was palpable as attendees sang, danced, and immersed themselves in the uplifting atmosphere.

Pura Vybz is more than just a party; it's an artistic celebration that echoes the essence of Make Art Not War. Through showcasing diverse voices and talents, we continue to foster a community of artists and art enthusiasts, locally and internationally, united by their passion for creativity and expression.

"Poetry of imperfection and low budget" Marcos López. Hosted by Dakyta. E1S2 #MakeArtNotWar

Marcos Lopez in LA presenting "Riotous". Curator: Jonathan Feldman -Getty Research Institute- / MakeArtNotWar.org/media

Riotous presents a series of works by Argentine artist Marcos López, produced since the end of the eighties on. López’s work is riotous in more than one dimension: it’s disruptive in his use of photography, closer to performance art or theater than to a registry, a document. His urban landscapes, for example, are perfect mise-en-scènes, where precarity and the popular become landscape, as in the close-ups at local bars or, more recently, in the Plaza de Mayo turned into the background of a cleansing ritual, stressing the human flag with a mask and the Pyramid of Mayo, symbol of the Revolution. López creates his own worlds not only by framing a portion of it, or applying a technique: in his works, images, histories, experiences, are deconstructed and rebuilt. Color is added or suppressed, sizes are perspectives become part of a game, the disciplinary is taken to a limit. Genres and beauty are in tension. The multiple world champion boxer, Carlos Monzón, in colors, measures up to a female counterpart and to a group, portrayed in black and white at the same gym in Santa Fé where the champion used to train.

By capturing Latin pop culture, especially in Argentina, and turn it into artistic thought, López plays with History, with memory, with culture. He turns it around, stretches and compresses it, stages it, revisits, and modifies it. Paradigmatic works like “Worried Gardel” and “Drinking wine in the terrace”, from the series Pop Latino, unfold a game of renovated references. There, the most famous tanguero of all times is captured in a moment of doubt, then of relaxation and exercising his profession. The local, the proximity, becomes part of the scene: the waiter, the soccer jersey. On the other hand, “The Captive”, from the series Subrealismo Criollo, the woman victim of the savage raid, inexorably destined to vexation and death as a symbol of the national “civilizing” process in European key, rebels, and defends herself. The blood on her blade finds continuity with the images confronting and surrounding her: “The Martyr”, a painting with an image repeated in photographs, suffers in silence the blade that pierces his heart, an analogy for Latin American cultural processes. The wallpaper that contains his suffering within the wall is a double wink to lower the tension, as it offers humor and, at the same time, brings about one of the artist’s earliest memories: his father’s hobby for changing the wallpapers in his house, at least, once a year. López intervenes catalogues with paradigmatic images from other artists, plays with the History of Art.

His proximity-obsession with David Hockney resides in the insistent use of primary colors. But López’s pop is “third-worldly”, it has the power of the tension between a Hollywood way of making and a constitutive precarity. The artist frees himself from the weight of Art. He brings the cultures of hybrid, contradictory peoples. In his work, vanguard and tango, perspective, and slums, coexist. The artist’s production is noisy, at times it gets out of control. Photography that looks like scenography melts with painting, installation, and video, or gets reversioned in other media. His transdisciplinary practice is, then, the result of the need to experiment as much as an inevitable effect of his aesthetic searches. There isn’t a unique way or making or style. Nor a fixed theme that determines the course of his becoming. Concerns and gazes are changing in López.

Marcos López lived many lives, creating a varied and heterogeneous spectrum of works. After appropriating and recreating a part of Art History’s most iconic images, and of bringing Argentine and Latin American popular culture to the art galleries through different media and disciplines, and through an infinite capacity of experimentation and creativity, López’s riotous nature continues to morph and mutate, projecting an unexpected road that will lead to mysterious and unknown horizons.

"In this new stage, the POPA Gallery presents its proposal based on the latest links created with the MakeArtNotWar.org foundation (Created in Buenos Aires - Based in California) working together based on a synergistic exchange model.

This synergistic association results in a selection of artists who, through their physical work, experimentation, and way of sharing, we wish to share in ArteBA. Focusing on Latin America, we open exchange and create links between the Latin community in Los Angeles and New York with local artists seeking dialogue with the zone and diversity.

We conceive art from La Boca, our focus on creating, producing, and exhibiting diverse artists in their supports, ages, and gender conjugation. We settled in the neighborhood before it was declared an Arts District, we were LGTBI+ when marketing was not yet done with this now-rooted concept. Forward, always on the stern, with the public, exquisite art lovers, and visionary collectors: from the neighborhood to the entire country and from here to the world. This advance includes wash & wear paintings but also indelible ones, large and small artifacts, disruptive order installations made by trans performers and also by cis artists who create by questioning our contemporaneity in its constructive, social, political, and sexual aspects, constantly probing the capacity of the materials that flow and stagnant to flow again in his creations. As Cesar Aira says. “For centuries the paintings and statues waited in their place for us to go see them. They behaved like ghosts that only speak when they are spoken to, they are sedentary and had the time for which they had been made and could wait. Contemporary art, wanting to be contemporary, annulled time by compressing it to the present”.

"Santa Fe Art Colony Diaspora"  @Make Art Not War  Media. Hosted by Eva Malhotra. E1S1 #MakeArtNotWar

"The Santa Fe Art Colony, situated in the industrial zone of Los Angeles, was established in 1986 with public funds through the Community Redevelopment Agency. It allowed for the adaptive reuse of factory buildings to be used as studios where artists could live and create. A 30-year agreement set rent restrictions on 85% of the 57 units. That agreement expired in 2017. Because the previous owners didn’t notify tenants of a rent increase, the city imposed a stay until 2019. Then the buildings were purchased by a Miami-based investor, The Fifteen Group, which promptly raised the rents on all the units - some by over 300%. Almost all the artists living and working in the Art Colony - many of whom called it home for over 30 years are not able to afford the high rents. Consequently, they must move out by July 15, 2022. This is not a unique story. It is a microcosm of what is taking place in all major metropolitan areas in the US and around the world. These cities are now blighted with tens of thousands of homeless encampments."
